Library Board Minutes - February 3, 2003

Present: Carey Bradley, Elda Fry, Larry Loomis, Norm Sandmire, Lewis Van Vliet

Library Director: Michele Nolen-Karras

Absent: Carol Clausius, Nancy Keegan, Debra Liegel.

  1. The meeting of the Library Board was called to order by President Norm Sandmire. He indicated that the meeting had been properly noticed.
  2. Motion to approve the minutes of the January 6, 2003 meeting was made by Lewis Van Vliet. Seconded by Larry Loomis. Motion carried.
  3. Librarian's Report:
    1. Financial report reflects the format used by the City.
    2. Distributed copies of the Library Board Survey results.
    3. Indicated that she would like to do a community survey. Will work with the long range planning committee in developing the instrument to be used.
    4. April: National Library Week
    5. Will be closed on February 10-11 (10:00-5:00) for computer training for library staff.
    6. Need to hire a children's librarian. Michele would like to include board members in the process. (Librarian's responsibility/bring recommendation to Board for approval.)
    7. Lighting: Will talk to Strang's to see if price has changed. (Suggested that Michele talk to WPPI.)
  4. Long-Range Planning Committee: Lisa Rewald distributed copies of the vision statement developed by the committee. Suggested that the Library Board needs to develop a statement that reflects their vision.
  5. Friends of the Library: Kathy Bastian congratulated Michele on being named Library Director, expressed pleasure with Tom Bachman's retirement reception, and thanked Larry Loomis and the committee which interviewed for the library position for the work that they did in conducting the search.
  6. Approval of Monthly Bills: Motion to approve the bills was made by Lewis Van Vliet. Seconded by Norm Sandmire. Motion carried.
  7. Motion was made by Larry Loomis and seconded by Carey Bradley to go into Closed Session to discuss personnel matters. Motion to reconvene in Open Session was made by Lewis Van Vliet. Seconded by Larry Loomis. Motion carried. Motion by Larry Loomis to hire Michele Nolen-Karras as Library Director per the Terms of Agreement. Seconded by Norm Sandmire. Motion carried.
  8. Adjournment: Motion to adjourn was made by Lewis Van Vliet. Seconded by Larry Loomis. Motion carried.
