Children are invited to LAUGH IT UP!

"Laugh it Up @ Your Library" is the theme for this year's Summer Library Program. Kids from age 3 to grade 7 (this fall) are invited to the Brewer Public Library for 6 weeks of stories and activities dealing with humor and fun.

Beginning June 10, story hour for children ages 3 to 6 will be held on Tuesday mornings at the library from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Preschoolers should be accompanied by an adult. Children entering grades 1 and 2 will meet on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. There will be a special storyteller and subject each week. Treats will be served each day.

Kids entering grades 3 and 4, "The Brunch Bunch", will meet on Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:00 am beginning June 12. Snacks will be provided. Students entering grades 5 through 7, "The Lunch Bunch", will meet on Thursdays from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. These children should bring a snack lunch. Special speakers, activities, and field trips will be planned every Thursday.

Children from age 3 to young adults entering grade 12 may also participate in a separate Summer Reading Program. Certificates and prizes will be awarded to all participants who complete the program by reading at home. Both parts of the Summer Library Program are designed to encourage year-round reading involvement and enjoyment.

Young people can sign up for the story hour and/or reading programs on or before June 10 at Brewer Public Library. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required. All programs are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the library at 647-6444.

Millennium Spotlight on James Thurber

James Thurber's cartoons (self-anointed 'doodles') are instantly recognizable. Featuring dogs, seals, imposing wives and befuddled husbands, his drawings conveyed a sense of mild alarm over the peculiar state of the world. Thurber's collection of drawings form only part of the contents of JAMES THURBER, WRITINGS AND DRAWINGS. (Garrison Keillor, editor). That other famous midwesterner, Garrison Keillor, has collected the best writings Thurber had to offer, including masterpieces like "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," and "The Catbird Seat." Also included are notes and a complete chronology of Thurber's life, detailing the famously zany author's lifelong bout with depression and anxiety. This volume is part of the Library of America's Millennium Collection of classic American literature, and is available at the Brewer Public Library.

What is Your Vision for the Brewer Public Library?

The Library Board and Long Range Planning Committee are looking for public input to create a long range plan for the library. Posters are available in the basement of the library to which patrons may add their ideas. Contributors may remain anonymous.
